Just west of downtown Boothbay Harbor, Maine, the Sparrow’s Nest is a charming two-bedroom cottage that is nothing short of stunning. Beginning with the drive up the winding path leading to the cottage (aptly named, “Glendalough,” a place of refuge for the wandering traveller), you can’t help but be overcome by the serenity and natural beauty of this place. Take your first steps into this space and instantly be greeted by the soothing aroma of lavender wafting through the air and a calming, crisp white palette.
Carefully selected antique furniture give the home a rustic sophisticated feel, while the luxurious linens and fully-equipped kitchen that features an authentic Italian oven make the Sparrow’s Nest a heavenly retreat. Curl up with a book on the daybed, pick fresh apples from the apple trees, or soak in the view of Suzie’s garden from the upstairs balcony.
Suzie and Neal have built and designed the perfect space for decompressing and have nailed down the art of exceptional hospitality. If by chance, you have to venture out, the downtown offers a plethora of options for boutique shopping and eateries with gorgeous bay views.
Bake pizza in an authentic Italian oven or prepare a surf-n-turf feast on the grill with chef-quality cookware and cutlery. Dive into the expertly-made beds for a luxurious night’s sleep or sink into the daybed for an afternoon nap.
During the warmer months, be sure to make use of the outdoor shower stocked with refreshing soaps and lotions. And, if it’s a cool, clear night outside, enjoy some wine by the campfire and catch a glimpse of a shooting star or two. Need to do laundry? It won’t feel like such a chore when you’re doing it in the chic laundry room with top-of-the-line appliances.

Suzie met Neal, an incredibly talented craftsman and builder, in Boothbay Harbor after US Airways (now American) changed her home airport to Portland. She didn't know it at the time, but before long, her and Neal would not just become life partners, but business partners as well.

The Sparrow's Nest is the most beautiful Airbnb that I had the pleasure of staying in. The home reminds me of Nancy Meyer (filmmaker), the homes in her movies are magnificent and make me want to live in one of them. That is how the Sparrow's Nest is decorated. It is breathtaking with so many special touches. We were constantly marveling at everything. We were greeted by our hostess, Suzie upon arrival. She made us feel very welcomed. In the kitchen was an incredible bottle of wine, delicious cheese, crackers and apples picked from her trees. The beds are so comfortable with linen sheets (wow), soft and comfy pillows and a luxurious duvet. The bathroom was incredible, too! Stocked with great products. The home smells fantastic... like walking into a spa. It was such a wonderful experience
My wife and I are digital nomads that hop around to bed Airbnbs every couple of weeks. We’ve strayed in close to 50 Airbnbs over the last year — from New York to California — and The Sparrow’s Nest is by far our favorite place (this is the second time we’ve stayed here)!
This home is beyond elegant…it’s fresh out of a fairytale. It has everything you could possibly need (and then some). We have stayed in beautiful bungalows in California, snazzy penthouses in New York, and gorgeous horse farms in Kentucky…but The Sparrow’s Nest was the only place that really felt like home…that brought out our best selves…that inspired us to think deeply and reminded us to breathe a little more slowly.
Suzie and Neal are incredibly generous hosts…they have become like family to us! We’ve said it before, but we’ll say it again — if heaven was a place on earth, it really just might be The Sparrow’s Nest.
The biggest mistake you'll make today is not booking Sparrow's Nest. Suzie and Neal are phenomenal hosts and the charm of Sparrow's Nest is straight out of a New England fairy tale.
The cottage is tucked in a quiet corner of the property surrounded by woods, orchards, and pristine gardens. Sparrow's Nest is a unique structure built by Suzie and Neal from the spruce stand that once occupied the site.
Every detail from the floor plan to the decor invites comfort in rustic luxury. The space is bright and airy and the glow of the sun spills through the knotty spruce boards. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you'll need to cook in style, seriously, every appliance and utensil is nicer than anything you have at home. In the bathroom, you'll find both an indoor and outdoor shower stocked with delightful soaps and lotions. The downstairs bedroom is plush and private. Upstairs there is another bedroom and lounge with a daybed perfect for cozying up with a book. The balcony is the best spot in Sparrow's Nest, it overlook's Suzie's garden and you can hear the low rumble of boats and gull song from the bay. In every room you'll find a freshly clipped bouquet of flowers and artful decor. If you're booking a weekend away or an extended stay, Sparrow's Nest has everything you need!
This is my fourth time at The Sparrow’s Nest and with each visit, I fall in love a little more. I almost hate to leave a review because I selfishly don’t want anyone else to find my hidden gem in Maine. But if you are lucky enough to book this spectacular home, you are in for a treat!
If you're thinking of booking, just do it. This is the BEST Airbnb I have ever stayed in. My husband and I just stayed for a week and were honestly sad to say goodbye. Others have commented on how great it is but I'll suggest a few reasons (even though there are many others). 1) The house is gorgeous. Suzie has thought of everything. The linens are beautiful, the fixtures are beautiful, the decor is beautiful. The grounds are lovely. 2) The house is a sanctuary. You can really relax. The house is set back from Suzie's house enough to have more than enough privacy, and there is a private fire pit that they will set up for you, making it so easy to light a lovely warm fire in the evening. 3) It is COZY! There are blankets everywhere. Upstairs, there is a daybed that is the greatest to relax in and read. The space looks out onto a balcony, which makes it really peaceful for doing yoga or just sitting quietly. 4) Suzie and her husband are just the most lovely people. They definitely give you as much space as you need, but if you're interested in getting to know them - like we were - they are hospitable hosts, friendly and welcoming. As others have commented, there are little details that greet you when you arrive. All in all, this was the perfect getaway and we cannot wait to go back to see Maine in the summer and stay here again.
